FAQ and Answers About Generation X Ministry

Wed, 05 Mar 2008 - 8:39 AM CST

Question: What are the current ages of Gen Xers?

Answer: There is some debate about this. However, you are probably on safe ground if you target people who are 20-35 right now (in less than two years, Gen X will be a completely post-college generation). If you want a college ministry right now, I would recommend that you not refer to it as a Gen X ministry.

Question: Is Generation X interested in spirituality?

Answer: Contrary to most public opinion that Gen X is a "slacker" generation uninterested in responsibility and spirituality, this generation is a very spiritual group of people. They are very attracted to authentic expressions of spiritual passion and righteousness. If given the attention, Gen Xers can become prophetic in a congregation, calling the Church to higher levels of commitment and devotion to Christ.

Question: What is the most important value to Gen Xers?

Answer: Relationships. While most generations value relationships, Gen Xers take it to a new level. They thrive in a purely relational context and will sacrifice more for relationships than did the generations before them. A ministry to Gen Xers must have relationships as its core paradigm.

Question: Do I need to be or look like a Gen Xer to lead this generation?

Answer: Absolutely not. If you value relationships and are willing to model an authentic expression of following Christ, you can be an effective leader.

Question: How do I start a Gen X community in my church?

Answer: Select a handful of Gen Xers who are already a part of your church. Begin meeting with them weekly for about 3 months building relationships, developing vision, and strategizing. Once a sense of community is established, go public with your meetings. The community will grow by word of mouth.

Question: When is the best time to meet?

Answer: There is not a best time to meet. It will vary depending on your local church and schedule. The only recommendation is that it not be in the morning. Maximum participation is typically achieved in an evening slot.

Question: What should we do in our meetings?

Answer: I would recommend that your gatherings have the following components: a worship band, use of personal testimonies, video clips and other multimedia resources, and a teaching.
